GTA4 VS MGS4

As the year comes to an end I’m reflecting on the some of the games that I’m considering for the top 10 releases in 2008 & so I’m reviewing 2 of the big ones “GTA 4 & Metal Gear Solid 4: guns of the patriots” - both are top contenders for the number 1 spot, and so on with the reviews…

METAL GEAR SOLID 4: guns of the patriots [ Playstation 3] [15+] [Konami]

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the latest & in my view the best of the series. The game itself is a next generation action adventure packed with innovative ideas & is truly cinematic in scale. I cant go too much into the story because it would only spoil it for people so instead I'm going to talk about the game play itself. One of the major differences this time around is that the player is thrown into a war zone, a war zone that features not only the enemies but allies too - you can chose to either go it alone or you can fight alongside the militia to help them defeat your mutual enemy.

The character movement & combat skills have vastly improved - using technology like octocamo snake will blend into the scenery of your choice, this is great for hiding from the enemy. Another new item introduced to the game is the solid eye a kind of multi featured eye patch which can be used to access radar/enemy positioning/info & night vision in addition it also highlights information on weapons & much more. As for the weapons themselves there are so many I don't even know where to begin, I counted about 60+ but there are special unlockable weapons & items too not to mention tons of modifiers & special ammunition - from handguns to assault rifles to sniper rifles even to rocket launchers this game has them all.

Perhaps one of the strangest items I came across in the game was a fully functioning ipod - that's right you can listen to a selection of songs/music/pod casts while you play the game. CQC (close quarters combat) makes a welcome return to the game too & this time it seems more fluid & lifelike, holding enemies up at gunpoint for them to drop items has been improved but then so have the enemies & by that I mean the games AI (artificial intelligence).
One of my favorite things about the game are the bosses - in the past games the bosses were always a crucial element of the game play & giving more depth to the story, as I said already the game immerses the player into an amazing cinematic experience & the visuals are some of the best I have seen yet even the voice acting is top notch. The graphics & environments are very impressive with so much detail to things like buildings/streets/jungles & they really blend well with the combat & stealth systems needed to progress through the game.
Pros:
Mind blowing cinematic
A deep range of replay value
Incredible soundtrack & music elements
Top notch combat & stealth scenarios
Memorable characters & boss battles
Comes with the amazing metal gear online package

Cons:
Slightly annoying load times (the longest being 4mins)
Some people who are not familiar with the series may not understand the long cut scenes
I didn't really like the whole "old snake" thing - its just a little to different for me

GRAND THEFT AUTO IV [Playstation 3 - Xbox 360] [18+] [Rockstar games]
I don't usually review videogames but with the new installment of Grand Theft Auto I will make a big exception. In the past the GTA series set the standard for free-roaming or (sandbox style) game play & GTA IV completely blows away the competition.. In fact it may very well be the best game of all time!

A brief history of Grand Theft Auto
Grand Theft Auto - 1997/1998 (released on the playstation & the pc)
Grand Theft Auto 2 - 1999 (playstation & dream cast)
Grand Theft Auto 3 - 2001 (playstation 2)
Grand Theft Auto Vice City - 2002 (playstation 2)
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas - 2004 (playstation 2)
Grand Theft Auto 4 - 2008 (playstation 3 & X box 360)
(I left out liberty city & vice city stories on purpose)

The gameplay of Gta incorporates many styles of videogames including role-playing/action/adventure/driving/racing & even stealth, the character must make his way up in the ranks of the criminal underworld by dealing with & working with various organizations including the traditional mafia/the yakuzza/the triads/drugs cartels & newer crime groups like the Russian mafia or mafiya. The older games focused more on the threat of asian & Italian american crime groups but the newer more modern games such as the latest installment deal with the threat of eastern European crime groups.

One thing the Gta games have always incorporated is the use of proper acting talent for the roles of the characters, for example Ray Liotta provided the voice for the character Tommy Vercetti, actors such as Dennis Hopper,/Samuel L Jackson/Michael Madsen/James Woods/Burt Renolds & even Frank Vincent have provided voices in the past & have helped to give the player a more cinematic experience.

The series has also incorporated the use of a good soundtrack in a game, in Gta 3 the makers of the game licensed the entire soundtrack of scarface, they followed the tradition with Vice City - this time around the game was set in Miami in the 80's so the soundtrack featured bands like Iron Maiden/Kate Bush/REO Speedwagon/INXS/Talk Talk/Megadeth/Slayer/Judas Priest/Blondie & even Bryan Adams! No matter what way you look at it the games soundtrack appealed to almost everyone. San Andreas was a different story however - the game was set in Los Angeles & I always thought the soundtrack couldn't stand up to the past installments. The gameplay of San Andreas was more in-depth, the player could customize the character with clothes/hair/accessories & even weight! Feed the character in fact you had to feed him or else he would waste away & die.. Which felt too much like a ghetto tamogotchi at times - the player could use helicopters/jets/boats/cars/bikes & even a bmx. The map of the game itself was hugely superior to Vice City & Gta 3 - Los Angeles/San Francisco/Las Vegas & huge section of desert & countryside between the states was also included.. In short the game itself was huge! So big infact that there were rumors floating around the internet about a hidden Big Foot character roaming the mountains ..this of course wasn't true.. But yeah I looked as did most people!

As with most great things (slasher flicks & heavy metal) controversy wouldn't be far behind, the series so far has been blamed for the cause of murders/car theft (of course) violent behavior & even drink driving, as if that wasn't enough the success of the series caused other games developers to copy their formula.. While some games were good most were just blatant rip-off's or clones - a few examples of similar styled games would be True Crime 1 & 2/Saints Row/Scarface.

GTA IV PS3 & Xbox 360
the game is set in the fictional city of Liberty City but as anyone will tell you its New York, the environments are noting short of brilliant, the player feels just like they are walking through (or driving through at high speed!) a living breathing city. I played both the playstation 3 & the xbox 360 version & I have to be honest & say it plays smoother on the ps3, the graphics looks amazing & the physics engine is almost flawless, for me it was the weather that really blew me away. The developers use a new next generation engine to generate unprecedented weather & lighting effects, the sunlight streams realistically through interiors of buildings & through trees - the rain effects are some of the best I have seen in a game & I constantly find myself wishing it would last because it looks so realistic!

The building & road textures feature more detail than most next gen games - potholes/debris on the roads & water ( helicopters kick up dust & debris as they hover closer to the ground)Reflections on surfaces such as glass & water looks so natural you might forget you are playing a game, one of the highpoints being doing a mission at night in a boat with the lights of the city reflecting on the waters surface, police helicopter searchlights beating down on you as you run for cover provide an ultra realistic experience for the player.

The physics engine is a huge improvement on the past games, throwing objects or falling objects (including people) will react less like an unanimated or lifeless radolls which was the case for so many other games.. & still is,. There really is so much in the game that it would be impossible mention all or even half of them! From the handling of cars (each car will handle differently) to the use of mobile phones (customizing ring tones & wallpapers etc)

The map consists of four of the five New York boroughs - Manhattan/New Jersey/Queens & the Bronx of course these are named differently but its obvious to most people which areas of the map are based on which real-life areas on New York.

Pedestrians on the street will walk through the city talking on their phones/smoking cigarettes/reading newspapers/dropping litter & so on, (one of the things that really impressed me was a pedestrian being arrested for fighting on the street.. The police showed up & took him away, naturally I figured the car would just disappear a minute or two later but it turned out the car went all the way to the nearest police station along with its occupiers ..very impressive

The player can visit internet cafes & browse websites for missions & receive emails , climb almost any building including fire escapes/telephone poles/swim/make & receive calls - take photos on their phone/even use Atm's

The music this time may night appeal to everyone & if I was being entirely honest I would say it was lacking on catchy artists or songs, as the character is eastern European one of the music stations is hosted by the Ukrainian singer Ruslana -I myself knew most of the songs & artists feature but as some of my friends pointed out most people wouldn't be familiar with the bands or songs. Classic Rock/Hip hop/Reggae/Electronic & Hardcore are also included but no classical stations this time around which is a shame because in the 3rd game (which was also set in Liberty City - but didn't have anywhere near the current scale) it really brought a touch of class to the game .. By that I mean it was cool doing insane stunt jumps with tracks such as "o mio babbino caro" by gianna Schicchi playing as you launched your car into the air

GTA IV (story & characters)
The main character is Niko Bellic, a veteran of the Bosnian war who is voiced by Michael Hollick but who looks an awful lot like the sniper from the film "behind enemy lines"

He arrives in America with thoughts of making it big, along the way he encounters friends & foes that depending on how you react to them changes your development through the story ( killing certain people or letting them live will change your overall outcome) as with before you can drive & shoot your way through the story - but as it is free roaming you can progress through the game at your own pace, a huge improvement on the originals is the aiming system it takes a little bit of getting used to but once you master it you will wonder how you ever did without it before - from automatic locking to free aim, thankfully this time you don't have to exercise or eat constantly to stay alive! & if you did need to replenish your health you can stop off at a food vendor or a restaurant, as I already said the city is alive & vibrant with the islands being linked by tunnels & bridges, as for the missions themselves they are enjoyable & feel like an integrate part of moving the story forwards - some of the gangs & people incorporated into the story are the Russian/the Jamaicans/the Triads & the Irish (woohoo for the Irish its about time we got a break!)

The cars look more noticeable to that of their real life counterparts, Bmws/Mercedes/Maybachs/Bentleys/Lamborginis/Ferraris/Porches are all there but of course they are not going under their real names & because my knowledge of cars is the same as my knowledge on say ..quantum physics I cant go into too much detail on them - tires on the cars will react to gunfire (shred when shot at Etc) bullet holes will stay - dirt & scratches will show up along with scratches & wear & tear, news on the radio will reflect your progress in the game often speaking about missions you have completed or were involved in .. oh & if all that was not enough you can even watch TV! that's right you can sit down & watch TV in your safe houses! (my favorite programs being "I'm Rich" & "Republican Space Rangers")

Overall I would say it was the best gaming experience for me ever, it did come with setbacks but they were through no fault of the game - for instance after purchasing a copy of the game for the xbox 360 the machine decided to have a heart attack & soon after died! This wasn't any fault of the game as it was my 3rd xbox console! It seems they are cursed & will almost certainly breakdown.. But buying a new console & it breaking down that day? A bit crazy no? so I went & bought a copy of it for my PS3 (12 straight hours & no problems!..apart from my eyes almost melting & the hallucinations) for the moment there is no real difference between the PS3 & Xbox versions of the game but this might soon change because Microsoft have signed a deal with the makers of Gta to provide exclusive downloadable content.. I can only imagine that the content will be missions/weapons/music ..perhaps clothing too, I almost forgot - Gta 4 plays online too! You can play various games like capture the flag/deathmatch/racing & much more with the all the city as the game map, playing a ranked game will earn the character money …but as I have experienced already it means the games are extra competitive so be ready for some hardcore online gaming & of course don't start shooting me from a skyscraper with a sniper rifle (some complete bugger kept doing that to me for 20mins!)

Facebook win $837m fine against spammer

Canadian Adam Guerbuez has been found guilty of hacking into face book members profiles & posting a bombardment of sexually explicit messages. Guerbuez who runs the company atlantis blue capital & ballervision was ordered to damages to the value of $873m, the fine was so high because he was charged with not only mounting a junk mail campaign but also he was found guilty at hacking into members profiles. After not contesting the case an injunction was placed on him which bans him from ever using face book ever again. Guerbuez was reported to have flooded users with over 4million messages, he also used advanced phising techniques & scams to trick users into disclosing their passwords & login details. Earlier this year the social networking site myspace won a similar case to the value of $230m when a pair of spammers were caught. Social networking sites like facebook & myspace have become easy targets to spammers who wish to make a profit off of their members - if the Guerbuez case says anything its that the sites are starting to fight back & win, true they will have a hard time getting the total cost of damages back from Guerbuez but it wont stop them from trying.

LangerlandTV on youtube

LangerLand.TV is a 10-part series of hilarious and highly irreverent satirical cartoons. More South Park than Bull Island, LangerLand.TV promises to be controversial, insane and downright funny. The series explores the murky worlds of politics, sport, music, media, celebrity & money, and through lengthy adjudication and careful selection they have assembled in one place the cream of 'prized langers' within each category. To be inducted into the “The Hall of Langers” is an honour, a rite of passage, and definitely something not to be sniffed at. The entire series is on you tube so I posted the links if anyone wants to see them for themselves.

Guns N' Roses: Chinese Democracy (review)

What a great year it has been for new music from some of the best artists out there from Metallica to Slipknot & from Slipknot to The Killers, 2008 has been one of the best years for music.

And so to the review.. Chinese democracy is the sixth studio album from the band guns n roses & its their first real release since 1993s “the spaghetti incident?” - the wait for Chinese democracy has been long..very long. Apparently the work began on the album as far as back as 1994 but details are sketchy at best what is clear though is the album hit so many bumps along the way that it almost never got released. The production costs on the album reached so high in the end that this may indeed be the most expensive album ever produced & it shows, the album boasts an incredible host of guest appearances. Composer marco beltrami who is usually suited to working on movie scores provides amazing orchestral backing that really just is mind blowing in depth, Sebastian bach of skid row fame recorded the backing vocals for the powerful song “sorry”. this time around the band has dropped its heavy industrial sound for a more well refined rock out of pure bliss, the sound is more modern but still succeeds to retain the patented guns n roses sound that has been often copied but never equalled. The guitar riffs are heavy but at the same time never loose their well refined sound, the vocals are flawless as is the sound from each of the bands impressive line-up. The biggest message I took away from Chinese democracy was that the more time something takes to be released the better it really is - if Chinese democracy had been released a few years ago I’m not so sure it would have gotten the same reception it does today, more than that it’s a sign that though so many new bands are being formed the old guard still know how to rock out with the best of them & as long as they keep it up music will always remain strong & a intricate part of peoples lives. In 2007 Sebastian bach stated that Chinese democracy would be the start of a new era in guns n roses & that it would form the first part of a trilogy of albums that would be released over the following years - here’s hoping we don’t have to wait as long this time around. I have listened to a lot of new material over the last year from various bands some high up in the food chain & some unknown & after hundreds of releases & gigs I can easily say that this is the best album I have heard all year - Metallica/Slipknot/The Killers all made fine albums but the top spot I’m happy to say goes to guns n roses. This wont disappoint anyone whether you are a hardcore music fan or a casual listener this album has something for everyone- simply flawless. (10-10)

First 'cyber-bully' trial opens

A housewife who created a phoney MySpace account to send hostile emails to a neighbour's 13-year-old daughter appeared in court yesterday charged with "cyber-bullying" that prompted the girl's suicide.

Lori Drew is accused of posing as a fictitious 16-year-old boy called "Josh Evans" in a plot to befriend and later send taunting messages to Megan Meier, a vulnerable girl with a history of depression who was being bullied at school. Ms Drew set out to "tease, embarrass, humiliate, make fun of and hurt" the "suicidal and boy-crazy" girl, said prosecutors, using the social networking site to tell Megan that "the world would be a better place" without her. Megan replied, telling "Evans" that he was the kind of boy a girl would kill herself over", then hanged herself with a belt, in an upstairs room of her family home in the small town of O'Fallon, Missouri, the jury heard. In a landmark case, the first "cyber-bullying" prosecution in the US, Ms Drew, 49, faces one count of conspiracy and three counts of computer fraud, which each carry a maximum of five years in prison. She sat expressionless in court on Wednesday as Megan's mother, Tina, recalled how her daughter, who was taking medication for attention deficit disorder, had apparently been befriended by a boy online in September 2006. A month later, during a visit with her younger daughter to the orthodontist, Tina Meier told the jury how she had called home to see how Megan was doing, and discovered her in tears, because "Josh" and two other girls were "saying mean things about her". Later that day, Mrs Meier asked Megan to show her the messages, and then scolded her for being online without a parent present. "The last words she said to me were, 'You are supposed to be my mom; you are supposed to be on my side'," she said.
Soon afterwards, Mrs Meier heard a commotion upstairs and discovered Megan had hanged herself in a wardrobe. She screamed for her husband, who used a knife to cut his daughter down. But it was too late: Megan died in hospital the following day. Ms Drew, who lived nearby, has been accused of using a fake MySpace account to find out whether Megan had been spreading false rumours about her daughter, Sarah, who attended the same school. Another witness, Susan Prouty, who manages an interior design shop and did business with Ms Drew's magazine coupon firm, testified that the defendant had told of her plan to print out a thread of flirtatious messages to take to Megan's school.

Ms Drew said the idea was to "humiliate her", claimed Ms Prouty. She justified the plot on the basis that, "As a mother, you have to protect your daughter". The case revolves around charges that Ms Drew lied on the fake MySpace profile, violating the site's terms of service which require users to provide "truthful and accurate" registration information. The case is being heard at a federal court in Los Angeles because Fox Interactive, the owner of MySpace is based in nearby Beverly Hills. Ms Drew's attorney, H Dean Steward, fought unsuccessfully to have the charges thrown out before trial, arguing that people routinely create fake identities on the internet without fear of prosecution. He also tried, and failed, to ban prosecutors from mentioning Megan's death on grounds that it might prejudice the jury. Much of the trial will revolve around technical aspects of social networking. Ms Drew claims she was not at home when the fateful, final message was sent, and – while she admits to knowing about the Myspace account – blames her daughter Sarah, and several friends, for sending the hostile messages. "There are two sides to every story," said Mr Steward, who asked jurors not to let emotions cloud their judgement, and to remember that, "this is a computer abuse and fraud case, not a homicide case".

The trial continues.

Ireland texters top of the pile

On average how often would you send a text message? Once a day? Maybe twice? Well a new study rates Ireland as one of the top countries in the world for texting & general yapping on phones, so how do we rate? Well apparently most of us send on average 154 text messages a month while our closet neighbour Britain sends on average 81 text messages a month, well in such a small country as ours it surprises me that we top the list but then I guess we really are a talkative bunch.

MAX PAYNE (2008)

I know what everyone’s thinking.. Another videogame turned into a movie right? Well its really half & half. Truthfully id say I’m already bias because I was such a fan of the games themselves. Well like hitman & a number of other games that were turned into movies this one may only really appeal to the fans but If you are looking for a different kind of movie with plenty of firepower then this might be the one for you. Mark wahlberg stars as detective max payne a man on the edge who’s family was taken away from him & the ones who done it were never brought to justice, so he himself sets out to find the ones who did it. Along the way he joins forces with mona sax played by the extremely talented mila kunis & bond girl olga kurylenko - she was also in hitman. The story itself is dark & it really wont appeal to everyone but for fans of the popular game they wont be disappointed to see maxs murky world finally make it to film. The atmosphere is matched expertly to the game & the score is also very well suited to the story, the valkyries add a little extra darkness to the story too & feel like something from the movie Constantine. Wahlberg is not the perfect actor to play max payne but he did do a good job at the role he was given, the only negative thing about the film for me was the character lupino..why? Because he was played by amaury nolasco who in turn plays sucre in the tv series prison break - having him in the movie really just made it drag & reminded me too much of prison break. All in all max payne is not a happy feel good romp of a movie - it’s a tale or revenge & of redemption so don’t be disappointed if you were expecting the usual run of the mill Hollywood action movie. If you liked the remake of the punisher staring Thomas jane & Travolta then you just might like this.. Otherwise keep away unless you like payne.

The Killers - Day & Age (2008)

The return of the killers is a grand one & they do have a lot to be proud of. After the amazing first 3 albums hot fuss/sams town/sawdust I really thought they might have run out by steam by now but thankfully they are no where near done & their latest instalment is nothing short of brilliant. When I first started listening to them back in 2003 I really didn’t think much of them but with each new release they have grown & matured into an amazing band with catchier lyrics each time. My favourite track on the album has to be “dustland fairytale” & it looks like it will be the Mr Brightside of the album, the song is apparently about flowers parents. “neon tiger” is another great track with lashing of rock thrown in & it sounds kind of like a u2 track but with more savvy. From the opening track on the album you will be hooked! there has been an awful lot of hype attached to this latest release & the band have been playing snippets of songs at live gigs all over the world to the delight of excited fans. It seems that with every album they release the more fans they pick up along the way & I’m sure this album will prove to draw in an even bigger crowd. Day & age really Is an amazing album & I’m happy to say its one of those rare albums that are released where every track on there seems to have its place, I would recommend day & age to anyone who knows or indeed likes good music.

Hackers infiltrate Obama’s victory with malware

President-elect Barack Obama is already targeted as the subject of a malicious malware campaign designed to steal information from infected computers. Following Obama’s presidential victory Tuesday, malware authors were quick to create a Trojan exploiting the high volumes of Web traffic surrounding Obama, security experts said. And so far, researchers say that spam capitalizing on Obama’s victory has experienced a sharp upward spike, comprising about 60 percent of all spam messages in what has become a globalized attack. “The hackers are taking advantage of Obama-mania,” said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for SophosLabs. “So many people have been excited or interested in (the election), that they might be susceptible to it.” Specifically, malware authors are exploiting users’ post-election curiosity with an e-mail purporting to offer news of Obama’s victory. The legitimate-looking message then offers the viewer a link, allegedly of a video featuring Obama’s acceptance speech. However, in order to view the clip, users are advised to click on a link that will allegedly download the latest version of Adobe Flash player. Once users open the link, a Web site actually links to a file called adobe_flash_exe, a malicious Trojan downloader designed to distribute information-stealing software on unsuspecting victims’ computers. Upon execution, the compromised machine receives a RootKit that sends the user’s personal data to numerous command and control centers. Researchers at Web security company Websense said in a blog that they have seen at least 25,000 e-mails through the systems using that particular technique, which, in addition to distributing data-stealing malware, also incorporates the victim’s computer into a botnet, a network of computers programmed to perpetuate spam campaigns.

What I'm listening to (album reviews)

The Cure - 4:13 dream
“not as dark as their previous works but that’s not a bad thing, this really is the band being themselves & though my first impressions were not great I have to admit its really grown on me. I just love the track called (the real snow white).“

Dido - safe trip home
“yay dido’s back! And its been a long wait too, I first heard about the production of the album back in 2005 & its been held back at least 5 times since then. What we are left with is a well mixed & sharp sounding piece of work that rivals (life for rent & no angel) no doubt this will be a big seller for Christmas.”

Cradle of Filth - godspeed on the devils thunder
“this could be one of their best albums yet, the new line-up meld really well together & the new drummer seems to know his stuff, the subject of the album this time around is the French aristocrat serial killer gilles de rais & yes like many of cradles other works this is a concept album.”
Sarah Brightman - a winter symphony
“perhaps the most amazing female vocalist to ever be released on a major label is back in time for Christmas, as the title suggests this is a Christmas album & full of classics like Silent Night & Ave Maria. Though some people might think I’m going to be automatically bias about this album I really have to say it’s a great piece of work & will definitely be getting a lot of playtime from me this season.”

Girls Aloud - out of control
“with a lot of girl bands you either love them or hate them & luckily for this band there is a lot of love to go around, I was surprised that I liked every song on this album because usually I only like a handful of songs. They sound more grown up this time & the songs have more texture & flare to them, I just hope the rumours of this being their final album is not true it would be a terrible shame as they still have a lot of energy in them.”
Lordi - deadache
“ha ha yeah I like Lordi & yes I liked them long before they won the Eurovision. I’m not going to say much about this album because really I think it will only appeal to the die hard fans out there..yes they have fans! (monsters keep me company) is a great track as is (bite it like a bulldog) in all honesty this sounds like their best album yet & if you haven’t heard them & are curious this would be a good album to start with.”
The Nightmare - revisited
“it seems to be a new tradition now re-releasing this album every year for Christmas & I have to say when I heard about it I immediately had my mind made up on it being just a rip-off.. Its actually not, ok true most of the same songs are on their but it’s the artists that really make this different, bands like fly leaf/rise against/korn & even amy lee make this a great little find for fans of the original movie & of any of the bands featured."
SAW 5 - official soundtrack

“another SAW movie & another soundtrack to accompany it. As the movies have been a brutal assault to the senses so have the soundtracks & this time around the formula remains the same..Charlie clouser provides the atmosphere with his moody tracks while bands like filter/skinny puppy & testament provide the lyrical assault that SAW fans expect. Its good…but its not that good, the album before it was less dark wave & more metal which really appealed to me - it even introduced people to more unknown artists like Emilie autumn, looks like the SAW franchise didn’t hold up so good this time.”
